The castle ruins sit on a cliff right above the beach. Not far away, there’s a small parking area where you can stop and walk along the shore. There are many people with dogs, and the walk along the beach is very pleasant. The beach is rocky‑pebbly, so comfortable water shoes are a good idea. Despite all this, the area is not crowded and stays calm and peaceful. On a beautiful day, the views are truly stunning.
The easiest access route is to park at the free beach carpark but walk back to the road so the houses are on your left side, keep going straight along the cycle path but then take the hill path on your right after the white house and after you go under the height restriction which heads up to the field, then walk across the edge of that instead of the path from the beach - that one is a lot steeper and muddier and a nightmare to come back down uf it's slippery. Great views across the bay from the tower
Still cant believe a castle can be washed away by the sea! Standing there looking at Greenan Castle, its hard to imagine that the sea has been slowly taking the land away over the years. It almost sounds like one of those local tales or myths, but the erosion is very real. Such a fascinating and atmospheric place, with the castle sitting right on the edge of the Ayrshire coast. The beach stretches out quite a way, although the water is not very deep even when you are around 1–2 metres in. I would not say the beach around the castle is particularly clean. The sand can be a bit muddy and there were quite a few flies around. However, as you move further away from the castle, the beach seems to get much better. Definitely worth visiting, especially when you stop and think about how much the coastline must have changed over the centuries. There is something quite incredible about seeing the castle standing there with the sea so close by.
Been here 3 times as we visit every few years , this old stunning ruin never fails to amaze me. I wish it was open to walk inside but for obvious safety reasons it’s not. The beach below is stunning, we found jellyfish along the way. The view of Arran is equally as beautiful. There is abit of steep climb to the side of the ruin but it’s definitely worth it once you get to the top.
Totally amazing place. There are a few ways to approach the castle. I followed the coast from the south, then cut inland and uphill along a dirt track. Keep an eye out for stinging nettles and thorns, and be really careful near the cliff edge. Greenan Castle stands above the Firth of Clyde. This small tower house dates back to the 15th century and was once part of the Kennedy family lands. Perched right on the edge, just the ruins, the sea, and the wind coming straight in. Absolutely amazing for landscape photography, with the light off the Firth and the cliff edge Definitely worth a visit if you’re into history or photography...
View from the beach alot more impressive than up close no safe access but overall a beautiful site
A picturesque place to visit on the coast. You can also enjoy it a walk along beach to Ayr. A lovely day out.
