Great Northern Pub & Kitchen

We visited St. Albans with some friends from America, and this was our favorite restaurant in town. They had a wonderful selection of British beers, including Harvey's best bitter - yum! They were so accommodating of our large group. The staff pushed a few tables together for us, brought us some high chairs, and they even brought us some toys and crayons to help entertain the kids. I believe our waitress's name was Sarah, but it's been a while and I'm sorry if I got it wrong! She jokingly called herself the great northerner, and she gave us a St Patrick's Day Guinness hat to take home.

I was looking for somewhere for me and my friends to watch the England game before we had to attend another occasion nearby. As I am on crutches with a broken ankle I rang the pub first and they said they would book me a seat in the garden. When we got there we had a bench seat right near the tv which was just perfect. We ate from the menu (Katsu Burger for me) and it was delicious. They brought a jug of iced water to the table with the food too. The service was just brilliant. I can’t remember to last time I went into a pub with such attentive staff. We had such a lovely night in a brilliant atmosphere and of course England winning the football definitely helped ! It's such a pleasure coming to this pub. From the very first time I popped in in 2018, to today, it has continued to be incredibly welcoming. There's a brilliant selection of rotating ales, good lagers and ciders and a brilliant menu of food. I love sitting outside in the renovated garden in the summer too. Also, Pete puts on the best pub quiz I've ever attended every Tuesday evening. Friendliest bar staff out there as well! Such a pleasure to be a customer of this pub!

My husband and I travelled to St Albans from Devon for our friends wedding. We were recommended this pub from another friend who lives in St Albans - it’s his local. We stayed for three days and visited the Great Northern everyday. It’s such a welcoming, lovely pub, with amazing friendly staff. We spoke to Emma the landlady quite a lot on our visits and she is truly a star - she really knows how to run a tight ship in a professional but extremely friendly way. This is hands down one of the best pubs I have ever been to. We unfortunately didn’t get to eat here but the food looked fabulous and we can’t wait to return. Lovely family feel pub, genuinely 5 star worthy, thanks to the chef & team for an amazing roast dinner, best Sunday roast in St Albans 😋 love this place so much
